Tent Cities, 2018

M.Arch Studio

This work is a research project into the homeless communities prevalent in Chicago, deemed “Tent Cities”, by authorities and the general public. This precedes and serves as a basis for Block City, which further explores how groups of people can subvert elements of an existing city to their needs.

The diagrams seen to the right illustrate the various conditions and systems of power these camps exists and struggle within. Also shown are the artifacts and belongings that create hierarchies of space, thresholds, and discrete programming on a seemingly informal level.

The camps studied here were removed in 2016 due to displacement efforts disguised as "cleaning and construction".
